Shady Grove and the Seventh Principle

Today, John Eaton illustrates the benefits to biodiversity following the 'cool burn' of the E. obliqua bushland at Shady Grove in April 2020 and relates it to our 7th Principle. 
In today's reading, The Rev. Forrest Gilmore warns that Unitarian Universalists make a profound mistake if the 7th Principle is limited merely to "an environmental idea". It goes much further than this! It's our way of embracing something greater than ourselves - the interdependent web expressed as the spirit of life, the ground of all being, the oneness of all existence, the community-forming power, the process of life, the creative force, even God!
Within the macrocosm of Planet Earth, it is a divided humanity that impedes and frustrates effective action to secure the "Web of Life" sustainably. John briefly explores the psychology of denial, and social bubbles empowered by the social media to explain polarisation and the drift to extremism.
Using the microcosm of Shady Grove and the impending decisions regarding the future management of its biodiverse obliqua woodland, the challenge will be to "practice what we preach". The 7th Principle challenges us to understand conflict within and amongst ourselves before striving to reach consensus as a Unitarian Universalist Community. "Divided we fall"!
